We are thrilled to announce our sponsorship of Cwmcarn Athletic Girls FC, a football club that has become a significant part of the Cwmcarn community, offering young girls an opportunity to develop both on and off the pitch.
Duncan, our very own rental manager, is also the head coach of Cwmcarn Athletic Girls FC. Duncan’s journey with the club began a year ago, and last season was his first. When the original coaches and committee left the club, Duncan and other dedicated parents stepped in at short notice to ensure that the girls could continue playing football.
“My daughter started playing for the team, and when the old committee and coaches left, I didn’t want her or the other girls to lose their sport. So, we stepped in,” Duncan shared. The club has become a crucial space for many young girls in the community, offering not just a place to play football but also a sense of belonging and development.
A Growing Club with Big Dreams
Currently, Cwmcarn Athletic Girls FC has two age groups: Under 8s and Under 11s. The wider Cwmcarn Athletic club also includes a Men’s 1st and 2nd team, a veterans team for the over-40s, and a newly launched boys’ Under 14s squad. The club’s ambition does not stop there. Duncan and the team have a long-term goal of developing teams across all age groups, from Under 6s to a Ladies senior team. They dream of seeing the young girls they coach today someday representing Cwmcarn Athletic Ladies.
Despite the challenges, Cwmcarn Athletic Girls FC is steadily growing. Duncan and the team have worked hard to attract new players, going from just 7 girls initially to now over 30 players. This growth is exciting, but it also brings increased costs for equipment, pitches, and other expenses. The club is committed to making football accessible to everyone, charging some of the lowest fees possible because, as Duncan says, “Football should be open to everyone, and cost shouldn’t hold you back.”
The Joy of Coaching
When asked about the most rewarding part of coaching, Duncan emphasises the development of the girls, not just in their footballing abilities but also in their social skills. “What I love most is seeing the girls develop their football skills, but more importantly, seeing them mix with people outside of their usual friendship groups. Nothing beats seeing the smiles on their faces when they win on a Sunday morning.”
